Relative PermitA relative's permit is issued to a foreigner who is a member of the immediate family of a citizen or a resident in South Africa. A work permit is an official document that gives foreign nationals the right to take up employment with any organisation in South Africa. The applicant for a General Work Permit has to provide a conditional offer of employment from a South African based employer, as well as documentation, confirming that the employer has fully endeavoured to employ South African citizens or permanent residents.
A Quota Work Permit may be issued to a foreigner when that person falls within a category decided by the Department of Home Affairs annually by notice in the Gazette after consultation with the Ministers of Labour and Trade and Industry. The number of permits for such category may not exceed the quota determined by the notice.
Work permits issued for exceptional skills are less common than the other two categories and applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must have their skills confirmed by an academic institution, governmental body or business organisation which is both relevant and reputable.
